We practise in two areas: commercial law and family law. We act for business owners, directors, companies and professionals, and for people whose family matters carry real financial complexity, from our offices in Melbourne and Dandenong.
Two practice areas, not twelve
A firm that lists everything tells you very little about what it is actually good at. At some point the list stops describing capability and starts describing willingness.
We took the other decision. Pentana Stanton practises in commercial law and family law, and both are run by practitioners who work in them every day rather than occasionally. Where a matter sits outside that, we will say so at the first conversation rather than three months in.
A shorter list is not a smaller firm. It is a more predictable one.
The two areas also meet more often than they appear to. A separation involving a company, a trust or a family business is a commercial matter and a family matter at the same time, and it tends to be handled badly when those two things sit with different firms.
Disputes between the people who own and run a business, and the duties that attach to holding office in one.
Contested commercial matters, contractual failure, recovery, insolvency exposure and regulatory disputes.
Claims made against professional advisers, reputational matters, and cover disputes with insurers.
Separations where a business, a trust, a self managed fund or a substantial property pool is in the mix.
Commercial law
Contested commercial work for businesses and the people who run them. Most of what we do here is a dispute that has already started, or one close enough that the decisions being made now will determine how it ends.
Family law
Separation, parenting and property settlement, with particular attention to matters where the asset pool is substantial, or where a business, a trust or a self managed superannuation fund has to be untangled as part of it.

A straight assessment
The first conversation is about where you actually stand, including the parts that are not in your favour. If your position is weaker than you have been told, you will hear it then rather than later.
A strategy with a shape
What the path is, what it is likely to take, and what the realistic range of outcomes looks like. Commercial matters are run against a commercial objective, not only a legal one.
Carriage to resolution
Negotiation, mediation or proceedings, with the same practitioners across the whole matter. Most disputes resolve short of a hearing, and they resolve better when the other side can see you are prepared to run it.
